چکیده

In this paper, we introduce a procedure for approximating the joint spectral radius of a finite set of matrices with arbitrary precision. Our approximation procedure is based on semidefinite liftings and can be implemented in a recursive way. For two matrices even the first step of the procedure gives an approximation, whose relative quality is at least 1/ √ 2, that is, more than 70%. The subsequent steps improve the quality but also increase the dimension of the auxiliary problem from which this approximation can be found. In an improved version of our approximation procedure we show how a relative quality of (1/ √ 2) can be obtained by evaluating the spectral radius of a single matrix of dimension n(n + 1)/2 where n is the dimension of the initial matrices. This result is computationally optimal in the sense that it provides an approximation of relative quality 1− in time polynomial in n and it is known that, unless P=NP, no such algorithm is possible that runs in time polynomial in n and 1/ . For the special case of matrices with non-negative entries we prove that (1/2)1/kρ1/k(A⊗k 1 + A ⊗k 2 ) ≤ ρ(A1, A2) ≤ ρ1/k(A⊗k 1 + A⊗k 2 ) where A⊗k denotes the kth Kronecker power of A. An approximation of relative quality (1/2) can therefore be obtained by computing the spectral radius of a single matrix of dimension n. From these inequalities it also follows that the spectral radius is given by the simple expression ρ(A1, A2) = lim k→∞ ‖A⊗k 1 + A⊗k 2 ‖ where it is somewhat surprising to notice that the right hand side does not directly involve any mixed products between the matrices A1 and A2. Joint and Generalized Spectral Radius of Upper Triangular Matrices with Entries in a Unital Banach Algebra

In this paper, we discuss some properties of joint spectral {radius(jsr)} and  generalized spectral radius(gsr)  for a finite set of upper triangular matrices with entries in a Banach algebra and represent relation between geometric and joint/generalized spectral radius. Some of these are in scalar matrices, but  some are different. For example for a bounded set of scalar matrices,$Sigma$, $r_*...

Analysis of High-order Approximations by Spectral Interpolation Applied to One- and Two-dimensional Finite Element Method

The implementation of high-order (spectral) approximations associated with FEM is an approach to overcome the difficulties encountered in the numerical analysis of complex problems. This paper proposes the use of the spectral finite element method, originally developed for computational fluid dynamics problems, to achieve improved solutions for these types of problems. Here, the interpolation n...

On spectral radius of strongly connected digraphs

It is known that the directed cycle of order $n$ uniquely achieves the minimum spectral radius among all strongly connected digraphs of order $nge 3$. In this paper, among others, we determine the digraphs which achieve the second, the third and the fourth minimum spectral radii respectively among strongly connected digraphs of order $nge 4$.

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Bending of Straight Beams Using hp-Spectral Approximations

Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed using traditional finite element interpolations (i.e., Hermite cubic or equi-spaced Lagrange functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, total rotation φ and/or shear strain γxz, or in the integral form u...
